Hey all, a few weeks ago on FTL someone said they were able to go to a NH DMV and obtain a license for a fictitious name and it was allowed under some legal code they referenced. Does anyone have any details on that or the specifics? Or can even point to the date of the episode?
Thanks!
A fictitious name, or just something other than their "official" name?
Using a purely-fictitious name would almost certainly be illegal.
If you use a name other than what's on your birth certificate, but it's a name you actually use, then putting it down as your name is not generally illegal, as long as there is no intent to defraud.
For example, I've used "MaineShark" for so long, and so many folks have met me online and then in real life, that I am often addressed that way. I could easily use that and, as long as I was not doing so for the purpose of misleading someone, it would be legitimate, 99 times out of a hundred. It's no different than writing "Joe" instead of "Joseph."

Joe,
I guess in either case I would be interested in the options NH allows - I am not sure how the DMV would be able to determine if it's a name you "really" use.
My understanding however was that as long as you are not changing your name to escape some kind of law infringement, it is not illegal. Having said that I imagine most DMV employees will give you a hard time if you tried to get an ID with a fictitious name, even though it is legal. Such was the case with the FTL caller who was ultimately able to get their fictitious name ID.
