My name is Mike Turner, and I'm 23 years old. Quite some time ago I decided that I wanted to live "off the grid," specifically in a home that I build nearly completely by myself, perhaps (hopefully) with the help of friends at certain points. Some of you are probably familiar with some of the building techniques I plan on employing; they are extremely low cost, happen to use natural and recycled materials, and require very little technical knowledge. Some of them are cob, straw bale, rubble trench foundation, earth and lime plaster, etc. I can get way more into that if you guys would like. A few of my friends have been convinced that this is a great idea as well… None of us want to participate in the "rat race," as it's called. Luckily we live in a time where we can enjoy most if not all of the comfort that we are used to thanks to the technological breakthroughs that have occurred and continue to today.
Before you start building, of course, one needs a spot of land to build on. This is what I'm looking for right now. I've considered a lot of areas, and really it's still up in the air, but the area around Keene seems like just about the perfect place to live. Right now I don't have many resources available for finding land that may be worth purchasing. In fact, ebay is about the extent of it, I'm sorry to say. My budget isn't very substantial. Since I'd rather my land not be more expensive than the house I want to build, I'm looking to spend at the most about ten thousand dollars. Less is better, of course… If anyone knows how I might be able to find reasonable listings of land in NH or around Keene for sale from my computer, I'd appreciate some help. Any advice related to my search would be appreciated.
I look forward to getting to know you guys. If you want to find out some more about me, check out a natural building experiment I have going on, see what my interests and tastes are, or whatever… Check out my youtube page. There's lots of different stuff there for you to chew on.

Take care everyone!

Hello and welcome to the forums, Mike.
Welcome, Mike. I'll be glad to help when I can, and to learn about specific off-the-grid techniques and methods.
Welcome!
Not to steer you away from Keene activism-wise, but as for buying property, I’d look for cheaper towns. A lot of activists are settling in Grafton, which has a lot less regulation (no zoning, no building code enforcer, a minimal planning board) and is very rural (mostly dirt roads and woods).
Keene has small rural towns surrounding it (Swanzey, Roxbury, Marlborough, &c.), but I don’t think any are as good as Grafton.

That's just the kind of information I'm looking for! I'll look into the Grafton area situation. It sounds ideal! Thanks everyone, it's great to meet you all. The discussion here is wonderful, by the way. ^-^
let the cheap prices guide you
you will have trouble finding a nice lot for only 10k, but i haven't been looking much
I am also looking at being self-sustaining, on land in the most remote isolated place I can find. Unfortunately the price range of what I can afford in Kentucky and NH seem thus far to be 2 different things.

I feel ya. It's a trade-off: cheaper land, or an awesome support group and the knowledge that your helping create a consensual society!
A lot of people seem to choose the independent route, but it might help to cooperate with other activists to obtain land. There's a lot of folks trying to do things the same way.

Well maybe not exactly the same way- I'm very traditional. I hope to one day be able to absolve myself of computers and other such frivolities and party like it's 1699.
Actually in regards to the liberty activity, that is actually the irony of my intent to come to NH- to be involved in the strugle to protect freedoms and property rights so I can go off into the middle of the woods and be left alone!
