Hello World!

My name is Rob and I am currently stuck out in WV but hope to be making my move up to NH in the (very) near future.  I am an IT guy (surprise!) who does all kinds of odd jobs.  I currently do AutoCAD work as well as run a small business network and website.  Previously I did similar IT stuff for a mortgage company that (surprise again) went out of business.  I have a very varied work history and hope that will help me be flexible when I look for work up in NH.  I prefer to find a contract or outside the system type job as I don't like to give my money to murders at gunpoint.  I am also currently considering whether I want to rent or buy a place up there, but have concerns about trying to buy given my lack of compliance with certain aforementioned murderers.  Probably giving way too much info for this intro, but I am excited to get up there around some more like minded folks and hopefully make some friends.  I tend to not have many given my lifestyle and ideas (I'm essentially an opinionated voluntaryist homebody).  I came up for PorcFest 2010 (my first) and had a great time and enjoyed meeting so many great people.  I have been a long time FTL listener and AMPlifier, so I have been exposed and excited about the ideas of liberty and what's happening in NH for quite some time.  Only recently has my personal situation "rearranged itself" giving me the opportunity to accelerate my moving plans.  Not ideal financially, but I will make it wok as I always have in the past.  I look forward to meeting more of you and hope to see you up there soon!  I'll be posting soon asking for advice about moving, jobs, locations, etc.

Thanks for listening (or not),

Rob

Welcome.  You'll pull it off.

Update:  I have convinced my current employer that I can continue to do my current job even more remotely than I currently do and it looks like I won't need to immediately look for a job!  I do, however, need to find a very affordable pet friendly rental situation (preferably alone for now as I just got out of a long term relationship and need some privacy/quality me time).  I have been trolling the housing section of these forums and Craigslist and I'm really open to being anywhere up in NH right now just to get up there!  Any and all advice is appreciated.  It is somewhat difficult trying to find a place from so far away…Ideally I'd love to be in or near Keene though.

Great news!

Regarding housing, it sure will be cheaper if you room with people, but otherwise I'm sure you can find something.  Try calling the folks on this thread:

Thanks Ian!  I assume those people are FSP/FK friendly?  Should I mention that I was referred by Free Keene (.com)?

Dorrie knows us, I don't think Chris does.

Awesome news - I look forward to seeing you around.

As far as renting vs buying in Keene - my advice would be to just dig right in and buy a multi-family (preferably an apartment building) and live in one of the units while you rent out the rest OR rent something very small and pet friendly while you scope out the area and see what is what.  I would not buy a single family in Keene.  The forced economy associated with Keene State College skews the housing market a bit.  Besides, most single family houses in NH are not just overpriced but also kinda crappy.  Like Puke says, lots of New England ought to simply be bulldozed.

Hey! I like those old homes! But admittedly, I lived in one only about 30 years old, so I guess my soapbox isn't too sturdy.
