Hello, We are Moving to Mason

Hello, I am Jacob.

My family and I are moving to Mason on September 4.  I'd like to invite you to our moving-in party.

I love what you guys are doing in Keene, and I lurk on these forums.  Keene will be 1 hour away from where I'll live, so I don't know if we'll be that way very much though.

We have two little boys and are primarily interested right now in homeschooling and family events.

As for activism, I am not looking to get into politics or to practice civ dis.  I am most interested in promoting / supporting homeschooling, educational efforts, and alternative markets.  I cannot say I do much right now, but I am a FTL AMP and I donate to a few things like Liberty Scholarship Fund and NH Free Press.

I occasionally write on a few blogs:

Letter to Tolstoy: A blog on pacifism, anarchy, and spirituality.
Little Men: Chronicles of our Homeschool Kindergarten and Pre-K Adventures!
Water of Life: Yet Another Scotch Blog

I work as a software tester (but soon to be software engineer) for a company in Massachusetts.  I've lived in New England my entire life (grew up in northeast CT, undergrad in MA, grad in NH, back to MA, and now (hopefully, finally) NH).

Hobbies include drinking whisky (mostly single malt Scotch), Boston Red Sox, hiking, reading (spirituality / religious and philosophy), and I am planning to ramp up gardening.

Thanks,
Jacob

hiking

Cool.  Welcome.  Maybe we can do some hiking of the mountains b/t Mason and Keene.

Welcome!  LOVE to meet another Single Malt afficicando, and love your blog!  A few years ago I owned a celtic pub that had the largest selection of Single Malts in N.H…my partner and I still go around the state doing Whisky Tastings under the name, "The Whisky Guys."    AND, I used to raise Scottish Blackface Sheep, most of which I bought at a farm in Mason :-)  !

Ok, we've got the hiking and scotch aficionados, now where are the gardening, red sox, and reading fans?

That sounds cool.  Are those private or public tastings?  Are you attending or putting on the tastings?

I find the NH liquor stores to be much overrated.  The selection is overall very limited, and the prices aren't much better, and often worse, than what I can find in Mass (save for a few anomalies like Ardbeg 10).  I'll probably continue to shop at my go-to store of Julio's in Westborough, MA.  Though I see you can mail-order in NH from places like Binny's.

I've been trying to whittle down my whisky collection in preparation for my move.  I think I'm down to 40 bottles  ;D

Public.  We usually charge $30-$35/person  for a two hour event, that includes a lot of 'education' about tasting and aromas.  I provide 5 single malts (one from each of the regions), and then allow tasters to try any other three from whatever collection I happen to have at the time (I usually bring a total of about 12, and always include Knappogue to offer an Irish single malt).  And I provide soft drinks free for the Designated Drivers.  Often private groups hire us as an "event" and the charge is different…we come fully kilted and in Prince Charley jackets, and provide handouts or do a power point, whichever is preferred…along with color charts, logs, etc.

I went to your blog and see you have Ardbeg and Talisker.

We obtained Aberfeldy 21 at the NH State liquor store once, which was VERY nice…the NH stores vary significiantly when it comes to single malts…most carry the boring usuals (Glenfiddich…), but some (Keene in particular) have pretty good selections.

I think I just leaned more about scotch than I had in the last decade… Which says more about my lack of knowledge than the information content of the post.
