My name is Justin, I currently live in southwest Florida while I'm finishing my Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. once I've finally got my release papers from the university, my wife and I intend to move to New Hampshire pending employment. I'm honestly not much of an activist, I'm more a person that just believes I should be left alone, but I strongly support the brave men and women that are on the front lines of that fight and believe that if I were surrounded by people like that I may get more involved.
I'm here mainly to get to know the good people of the Shire in order to make contacts that will hopefully make the move just a bit smoother for us.
I heard about the Shire Society forums via Free Talk Live/Free Keene
Welcome , great to have you.
Many people who move here have never done activism. Come on up and see what interests you.
Hello Justin,
Welcome to the forum! I am from Tampa, Fl and made the move back in February. Is there a place you are thinking about in specific? I live in a small town 20 miles from Keene. I love doing activism, but many people don't want to, that is certainly okay! There are many things one can do instead of activism!
Peace & Love,
Emberlea
I'm from the same area (Tampa), I go to school there but live down in North Port right now. I'm not exactly sure where I want to move yet; I'm an engineer so I suppose it will depend mostly on where I can get a job, but I'm thinking somewhere near Keene. Ideally, we (my wife, myself, and our newly discovered liberty loving baby :)) would like to live somewhere large enough that there is something to do, but small enough that it's not all hustle and bustle, or just outside of a larger city.
Another big consideration for me is that I want to be somewhere that my presence as part of the FSP will matter. Moving to New Hampshire is a big deal for me because I've lived in Florida my whole life (only seen snow once, only been north of Georgia a handful of times) and enjoy the warm weather and beaches, so I want to make sure this move really counts for something.
welcome freedub, you dont have to worry about hustle and bustle therres not much of that in NH, activism is what you make of it once you get here you can decide where you stand.
Justin,
I think you will really like Keene. It is full of great people and lots of activism. I have only seen snow a couple times, but the weather here is pretty great for being here only 7 months. The day after I moved, it snowed the last snow of the season. It was incredible. The roads were cleaned within a few hours and I was able to drive!
Keene is a college town, so it has some hustle and bustle but not like a huge city. There are lots of things to do in Keene, which is also close to Brattleboro, VT and not far from the border of Massachussetts. You can get to NYC in 4 hours. Boston in 2.5 hours!
Also, I am considering starting a Sudbury school here for those parents who believe in true academic freedom! It is an unschooling school!
Yes, there is no hustle and bustle here. I live in the biggest town in NH, Manchester. People are still overly polite and terrible drivers like any other small town. The difference is jobs. You can also work in Mass and live in NH. There's lots of commuting like that because of the tax structure between the two states.
Hi Justin.
From one mechanical engineer to another, I … wish I could think of a good engineering joke but there really aren't any :).
I have worked as a mechanical engineer in NYC for the last 6 years, and I'm moving to NH next summer (2013). I am currently attending graduate school at Columbia to become a physics teacher, though, so I haven't scouted any engineering jobs in NH since that's no longer my career path.
I am moving up with my girlfriend and we, also, are looking for a much quieter place, with some privacy so we can play our music loud and sunbathe naked on the roof. Kidding. But we are looking for something not too far off the beaten trail, but with access to some larger cities and towns. We are going to be moving to the Seacoast area, in or around Portsmouth.
Good luck with your search! Hopefully will meet you up in NH some day.
-Adam
Hey Justin,
Great to meet another person gearing up to move. My wife and I are arriving in Bethlehem this month. If you friend me on Facebook and keep in touch, I'll do my best to be there for you when you eventually get to NH.
I look forward to becoming active but I have no idea yet how that will play out. I want to be involved, and do everything I can to move our society towards liberty, but I don't particularly want to be arrested right away - probably not a good way to impress my new employer. After we settle in to the area we'll figure out how to contribute the most effective way we can, and I'm sure you will too.
