Hey there guys. I'm Vegard, living in Oslo, Norway, and committed to the FSP about a year ago. I'm 30, and I've been a libertarian for at least 15 of those. As you can imagine, living in Norway, peers of similar ideology are pretty hard to come by (>99.5% socialists, or 'social democrats' as they like to call themselves), so, ideologically speaking, I end up being pretty alone in this neck of the woods… and no-one seems to have the notion of a government being anything but omnipotent. If you've read 'A Brave New World' by Aldous Huxley, you'll know the feeling
Anyways, I've been listening on and off to FTL, gotten to know NH a little through Dave Ridley's YouTube channel and other sources, and obviously been following the Ron Paul campaign enthusiastically. I plan on moving somewhere between 2011 and 2012, and Keene seems to be my top candidate location currently. Meanwhile I was hoping to get to know some of you through these forums
I'll probably have some questions suitable for other categories pretty soon, but I wanted to introduce myself before posting further 8)
Good luck getting here!
Welcome! ;D
Welcome to the forums, Vegard!
Welcome to the forum, Vegard, and pre-welcome to NH.
A lot of socializing can be done remotely. It's nowhere near as enjoyable as in-personal socializing, but it's sometimes better than isolation. If it helps you, I hope you read and post a lot - interact with like-minded people where you find them, even if it's 1/4-way around the world.
Welcome!
Hi Vegard,
Welcome to NH!
We need talented younger adults to come to NH, no matter their political persuasions. I would strongly suggest that you come over for a visit before you commit and make a permanent move. We have a well-deserved reputation for smaller government and keeping our noses out of our neighbors' business.
Thanks for the welcome
I hope to visit before moving, time will show when. With some scheduling luck perhaps in conjunction with a PorcFest? I guess I'll have to figure out a few things regarding citizenship, greencard etc, but that shouldn't be too much of a hurdle hopefully.
I didn't say much of who I am or what I do, so I should perhaps flesh that out a little.
I've served as a military officer for 4 years, ran a small company for a year, later my own one-man consultancy for a couple of years, and the last few years I've been working as a programmer at a public hospital (the only kind there is here in the east-block :o ). My history of civil disobedience is rather unimpressive, but I tried to feel the water recently… I didn't file my tax returns the last couple of years since they waste it anyways. Consequence? $20k fine + back taxes The irony being obviously, I am now 'contributing' considerably more to the state than I needed to. I'll opt for more intelligent disobedience in the future >:( These… ehrm… financial reasons kinda delays any moving plans too. It does help my resolve, though Beyond this my liberty activism has consisted of being part of starting a libertarian-like party (or shall we say, being close to the process, I was 16 at the time), ran a libertarian blog for a while, but I plainly couldn't stand the stupidity of the reader-comments after a while (in a country where the most right-wing party thinks 50% of GDP is a decent size of government, your readers think you want children to starve to death if you suggest that public schools (which again, is the only kind around here) shouldn't be responsible for funding the feeding them too). It ends up a little bit futile :-X
Looking forward to getting to know you all better through these forums before the move
Just as I've cautioned others, I would caution you against acts of disobedience that could you give you a criminal record in Norway. It could prevent you from being admitted to the US.
