Hello From the Twin Cities Minnesota

Hello: My as Jason and I currently live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I signed up with the Free State Project a little over a year ago. As things continue to deteriorate in the state of Minnesota which in turn is starting to affect my own finances I am finding less and less things keeping me tied to this state. With that said I figure it's probably a good time to start reaching out to people in New Hampshire. I have no set time frame for moving and considering I've never set foot in the state of New Hampshire it is a little daunting.

Thanks.

Jason

It gets easier and easier from here on out and less scary now that you're talking to folks here.

Welcome.

Jason, we are in a similar boat. I have NEVER been to NH, just hear things from friend who live/ have lived there. I think the scariest part is jumping into the unknown, once you get there I bet it isn't so scary any more.  ;D

I commented upon that thusly:

SCARIER NOT TO

Freedom's clearly disappearing;
No one here shows much concern.
In New Hampshire, though, I'm hearing
People work for its return.

I can't simply kvetch all day–
I want to help the world improve.
But one impediment blocks the way:
"Whom the Gods would destroy, they first make . . . move."

I don't want to sift through my mountain of stuff,
Reducing my holdings to just what's enough.
I can't stand the thought of securing a rental
And bumpily driving it cross-continental.

Selling a house is a sure way to suffer–
Buying or building a new one is tougher.
I hate the procedure of having to lurk
In doorways and waiting rooms looking for work.

I don't like confronting my friends and relations
To proffer a litany of explanations
For why I would pack up my life and desert them.
However I phrase it, it's going to hurt them.

Then I look out on the social condition:
Incipient dangers approaching fruition
More fierce than the ones nearly reaching full flower
In rain of unlimited government power . . .
And, sobered with caveats borne by that vision,
I see that I've already made my decision.
I tell myself, You've
Reached the point where you've got to.
It's scary to move,
But it's scarier not to.

Having to change your established routine
Is stressful for anyone over nineteen.
I don't like the prospect of having to go
Where, most of the year, the ground's covered with snow.

New social contacts aren't easy to make.
New job, school, church, laws, customs–give me a break!
Liberty types are eccentric and quirky.
What if they're rude and standoffish and jerky?

Do they spend all of their free time protesting
For cannibalism and child-molesting?
Will I end up with a long arrest record
And have to conceal why my past is so checkered?

I'll be the first to admit, I have doubts:
Five thousand and twelve of them, or thereabouts . . .
But one thing is certain: At this day and time, it
Looks ominous for the political climate.
I'll be kind of cold if I go, but if not,
The rest of the nation will soon be too hot.
I tell myself, You've
Reached the point where you've got to.
It's scary to move,
But it's scarier not to.

With forbearance, hard work is a thing to have fun with.
(That's how it looks to me now that it's done with.)
Most of my family and friends understood.
Nothing went quite as askew as it could.

A whole crowd had formed as I pulled in the lot.
I soon was unloaded–and then I was not . . .
The people were wonderful (What a relief!):
A mixture of types, with one common belief.

And what a belief!  When it's put into action,
No other feeling gives such satisfaction.
Each day we do it, and live it, and be it,
To craft an example, that others might see it.

In one day, I do more for freedom out here
Than I could do back there in over a year.
This is the life I'd been hungering for–
It was worth all of the effort, and more!
Now that I've gotten here, it would behoove
Me to tell every one of my friends they should move!
Why did I try
To convince myself not to?
The time's flying by,
So admit it–you've got to!

Welcome and come on in, the water's fine.

Same here.  I was just reminiscing how "fun" Minnesota was, back when Jesse was Governor.  Things really seemed to go downhill after he was gone.  I'm not sure there's a direct connection there … but I know that's when the D's & R's finally got their chance to push the smoking bans & stadium taxes through.  Not to mention that the Twin Cities economy really sucks right now.

Where do you live in Mpls?  I'm in Uptown, right off Franklin Ave.  Maybe you'd be interested in grabbing a couple beers sometime.  Yes, NH seems a bit daunting … that's why I'm finally making a trip to check out the place in a couple weeks.  I'm sure I'll have stories & photos to share when I get back.

Why daunting, exactly? I guess I don't understand … do people just mean the idea of moving to a new place, or is there something about NH in particular?

[/quote]I think people are scared to move to new places… Besides moving to Germany, the only places I have moved in the states have been within 20 minutes of where I was born, it can be intimidating to move to a different state (for me at least).

That definitely makes sense – and welcome to everyone :). I thought NH might have some sort of particular reputation or something.

Hello, maybe daunting was a poor choice of words.I have my concerns because this kind of move would not only affect me but my wife and my two-year-old son. I need to take into consideration what's in their best interests as well as my own.

Hello Jason, welcome to the forum!

I don't think it's unreasonable to call moving an entire family from one state to another "daunting".  I admire you for giving it the thought it deserves and giving such consideration to the well-being of your family.
