Hey everyone,
My name is Adam. I currently live in Brooklyn, NY and I've worked as a mechanical engineer in Manhattan for the last 6 years. I recently quit my job to attend graduate school in education at Teachers College at Columbia, to become a high school physics teacher in NH. I've always wanted to teach, but I figured I would save some $$ working as an engineer, then make the move. Turns out, engineers don't make as much money as everyone thinks. To live comfortably in NYC I'm just not saving that much, so we both decided to just take the plunge rather than wait any longer.
My girlfriend and I will be moving to NH next summer (2013), and we couldn't be more excited. I first joined the free state project back in 2006, but never really had a real timetable to move. I started listening to Free Talk Live back in 2004 or 2005, and I didn't realize it, but my values were gradually shifting toward voluntarism.
I met my girlfriend just over 4 years ago, and brought her to the Liberty Forum back in 2010, to give her a better idea of my somewhat controversial personal beliefs. I'll never forget the moment she said "I've always felt very similarly, but I never thought anyone else did." The rest is history.
Since we're moving up next summer, I decided I'd rather not wait to make new friends. That's why I'm on the Shire Society forums. My girlfriend and I are VERY social people. Sure, we have our strong principled beliefs, but we also like to have fun, and I am hoping to meet some awesome people on this forum and others before we move. We're going to end up somewhere near the seacoast, since we live for the ocean / beach / seafood / all that good stuff. Time will tell if we can afford (or want to) live close to Portsmouth, but we'll be visiting this winter to scout neighborhoods and, with luck, maybe meet some new neighbors and friends!
My interests include craft beer, ultimate frisbee, physics, excellent TV shows like Breaking Bad (my future? I sure hope not) and Community, and playing party games like Rock Band, Taboo, and Settlers of Catan with friends. My twitter handle is @eastcoaster1237, though I rarely use it.
Drop me a line if you want to chat, or if you would like to grab dinner or a beer in January 2013 when we come visit. Looking forward to meeting you all!
-Adam
How wonderful that you and your gf are moving to NH! Welcome! There are lots of groups in NH! http://forum.shiresociety.com/index.php?board=45.0
That link is for the Seacoast forum discussion group! I hope you enjoy your visit in January. What areas will you be visiting? You should definitely come to Keene and visit with all the wonderful activists there and see the LRN.fm studio!!!
Darryl Perry & I have a show on LRN on Sundays from 3-5pm and then we attend Social Sundays afterwards! I hope to see you both there!
Peace & Love,
Emberlea
Hey, I know that guy! Welcome, Adam.
Adam has been so kind as to invite Mark and I out to dinner when we go to NYC each year for a talk radio conference for the last several years!
This year we went to see UCB on his recommendation, and it was great!
Thanks for the kind words, guys!
Emberlea, we're not entirely sure just yet where we will be visiting, probably at least 3 or 4 towns around the seacoast area, as we need to be commutable to Boston. However, I would love to come through Keene and meet some of the personalities I feel like I already know from listening to Free Talk Live and Liberty Conspiracy. To see the LRN.FM studio would be on par with taking a walk around the set of Saturday Night Live, very cool. I'd love to. A Sunday would be the perfect time! I'll be in touch to make that happen as the date approaches. Thanks for making me feel so welcome!
Ian & Mark (and the rest of the FTL crew) do SO MUCH for liberty, I feel like the absolute least I can do is take them out to dinner when they come visit my little haven of statism here in NYC. I do AMP the show a healthy amount, but the change you guys are doing is incredible. I am excited for my girlfriend and I to get involved in our own way when we arrive in NH.
To be honest, Ian, that UCB show was one of the weirder ones I've seen, not nearly as funny as it should have been. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though. It's fun connecting with you and Mark in person.
Best,
-Adam
