I don’t know about other clients, but Mac Mail has an option to suppress automatic loading of remote content. You get a message at the top that says “This message contains remote content.” if you have the feature enabled, and if you desire, you can press the “Load Remote Content” button once you know the email is from a trusted source.
I would always use this feature.
