Don't know when I'll ever get to move to NH.... but I really, really want to

Hi-

I'm 38, have two lovely children and a beautiful, intelligent wife. We live in the bay area in California. On the plus side, we've both had extensive discussions about moving out of the bay area and even out of the country, things like the cost of living, the crumbling schools, and the police state / militarism issue (when we've talking about moving out of the country, that is) have all come up. She's generally pretty anti-war and pro-peace and I'm virulently so (being of the voluntaryist / "libertarian" / liberty-minded stripe).

On the negative side, my wife is pretty much a Green Party type. Anti-war, anti-police state (more or less) very much socially liberal, but doesn't have any principled stance against statism as it regards things like public schools, (at least the concept of) police, government welfare, etc. She tends to use different versions of "I'd rather have a cat provided it barked like a dog" whenever I point out the problems with her pro-government tendencies, and she (when she's feeling angry with my politics) tends to conflate me with Republicanism. We have interesting dinner conversations.

Anyways, it's pretty tough going for me. Although we have a very good marriage I realize that our different moral philosophies as regards politics are posing some difficulties for us. Personally, I find the idea of moving to the Shire more and more attractive day by day. I haven't really openly brought it up to her yet - I would need more than just, "let's move to the Free State Project!" to sway her. Some opportunity would be the hook that would get her; some great job, some stats on the cost of living, whatever.

Another problem is what we do for a living. I'm a psychologist. I work for the feds (I work for the VA). I like my job and I'm good at it - however, it's hardly what I would call living the life of a voluntaryist as my paycheck comes in the form of federal reserve dollars coerced out of people's pocketbooks, and my job description is in part to heal the emotional wounds caused by the violence of the state… nice, huh? My wife, BTW, is a lawyer who works for the UC system (e.g., she basically works for the California State government).

I'm a tough case. But as I get older I feel like I need to do something to advance this cause I feel more and more strongly about, despite my limitations. I'm glad to be here, I hope that I'm not beyond hope.

Thanks again

I suggest you bring your wife to Porcfest and/or Liberty Forum to meet the people involved in the Free State Project.
Then convince her that there is no downside to owning a vacation property in NH.
Wait for her to fall in love with NH and suggest you take an early retirement here.
It worked for me.

Hello pychovoluntaryist,

Welcome to the Shire Society forum! If you guys would enjoy some easy camping Porcfest would be a great family vacation! You can certainly look on the Free State Project website for all kinds of reasons NH is a wonderful place to live. Start here: http://freestateproject.org/choosenh

Good luck!

You can do anything you really want to you just have to apply yourself and make it happen.

I know a few people wanting to move from CA to NH also.

Welcome!  How did you find us?

I think the people who have posted coming to Porcfest have the right idea.

Come and visit NH, the experience is pretty persuasive to move here.

I think you're right, and I think that's probably do-able. Thanks for the advice, everyone.

I've been to Porcfest once, in 2006. That week was the only time I've spent in NH.

I just closed on a house in Lancaster, and will be moving my family there next weekend.

That is how strong a grip this place can have on you, once you visit!

Congrats, KB - it's been a long time coming.

Welcome Psychvoluntaryist,

I am so happy to hear that you are considering moving to NH! PorcFest is so much fun! I have been two years, last year I brought a friend and his 8 year old son and I brought my teen both years! We all had a blast! Going to PF made my son & want to move to NH with a fervor! Bring your family, they will fall in love!

Peace & Love,

Emberlea
