If you’re like me, you’re immediately repulsed by the word ‘democratic’. But in this context, this is about K-12 students being treated as equals within a single school. Here’s a short introductory video about the concept: https://youtu.be/RhUx1pArrO4
I think Patrick briefly told me about a school like this, but now I have met someone who sends her daughter to a Sudbury school near the DC area. In this school, the staff members employment at the school, including the director, rests on the student’s vote. There’s no curriculum, students pursue their own interests and staff are only there to facilitate (and fulfill paperwork demanded by the state).
I’ve been nothing but impressed by what I’ve read about Sudbury schools, and now I’m as motivated by the concept as I am about unschooling. In fact, I see an enormous overlap between democratic education and homeschooling.
Are there any such schools in New Hampshire? Are there any individuals interested in starting a school like this?
