Greetings Shire Folk,
My name is Brian and am looking to move up to Keene or somewhere nearby within a week to join in, and even build upon, the liberty activism going on in that area as well as living with other like minded individuals. I describe myself as a Market Anarchist/Voluntarist and agree with every word in the Shire Society Declaration. I am a 26 year old male who has grown up solely in Southern California and Florida so I am spoiled when it comes to weather. That plus the fact that my body type doesn't add much insulation makes me quite worried about the transition, but at the same time, I am very excited about all the work going on in NH towards something that I feel very passionate about and want to be a big part of it. I also love outdoor and mountain activities such as skiing and rock climbing/bouldering which I don't get to do here in the flat wasteland known as Florida.
The reason I am here and also how I found this forum was through my quest of poking around for a place to live in the area. I happened upon the site for Porc Manor, and subsequently a post by the user here named TackleTheWorld who mentioned a room available near Keene. I wish to speak with them about the availability and all the other details, or if anyone else here knows of an apartment in or near Keene (besides whats already listed on craigslist), that would be helpful too.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and look forward to building a society that isn't founded on violence with you all. Hope to see you soon.
P.S. I always love talking about philosophy, music, "politics", ethics, and anything that has to do with the outdoors, and if anyone has suggestions or help to give me about outdoor adventuring, it would be greatly appreciated. I have never lived with "seasons" and never lived with snow.
Welcome Brian!
Thanks for noticing us in the Shire. Being cautious of cold weather is natural for slim southerners, but look at Ian from Florida, Jim and I from Las Vegas. It can be done, especially if you like skiing/ sledding/ icy sports.
Haha, yea, I'll just have to get used to it and remember I can't automatically wear shorts outside every day of the year. I am looking forward to the snow sports for sure though. Since I've never lived near it, I still act like a little kid every time I see it.

I am a FL native and I don't much care to be cold, and I get cold hands, feet, and ears very easily. I have adjusted slowly over the 5 years I've been here, but I don't think there's any getting used to 20 degree weather like we had today. It's just the price to pay for a chance at freedom.
Wow thanks so much for that link! Every time I think I have found all the groups that liberty activists in the NH area are a part of, a new one surfaces. And this one is my new favorite, exactly what I have been looking for.
It was 40 today in Florida and still played ultimate frisbee (though in a sweater and sweat pants), but it was quite a challenge. I have the same issues as you with the extremities getting cold easily, but you are exactly right, the price one pays… But I plan to take full advantage of the outdoors as much as I can either way.
People in NH spend more time outdoors than people in FL, I think. When you are cooped up more in the winter, the contrast of the warmer seasons really sends people outside for lots of activity.
I'm from Northern California. It's cold here, but totally tolerable. I would definitely like to see another Ultimate Frisbee player move up here. It would be nice to get a free stater pick-up league going. Have you considered Manchester?

Aw heck Ian…it's usually 20* in my living room. Geez you guys in the tropics down there in Keene. ;D
@elkingrey: Good to hear. I have actually changed my plans and am looking to locate to Manchester. The idea of a free-stater ultimate team sounds awesome to me. I have a horrible throw, I don't even know how to flick, but I can catch and even lay out with them the best of them :). With some time with other players, I'm sure I'll improve quickly.
@free libertarian: That makes me feel better haha.
I hope that's not the only reason you changed plans. There are guys in Keene that play ultimate frisbee, and the PORC group was founded in Keene, FYI.
Not at all, I have been struggling for the longest time about the two places. After some thinking, it seems like Manch would be better for the initial move as I am coming up with no job, not many marketable skills, and no housing, and there seems to be more opportunities for me to get settled in. I have no qualms about living in one place or the other and plan on visiting both as often as I can for meetings and what not. The Keene Activity Center seems like the coolest thing to me and not sure if Manch has something similar. Gaah this is why I can't make up my mind! Too many opportunities? Who would think to have such a problem.
Have you seen the Keene housing/jobs forums here?
I, too, moved to Manchester because I was in the same situation you are in. No marketable skills, no job, etc. There are a lot more jobs to be had in Manchester. Move to Manchester, get a job, then determine where you'd like to live, and then get a job before you move. It's a lot easier to get a job 50 miles away than 500 miles away.
BTW, I was unemployed for three years in California. I got a job in Manchester in no time. Just saying…
@Ian: Just found it and this is an awesome resource (and I might help post them to facebook when I get in the area), though it sounds like elkingrey and I are in the exact same boat and understanding. I will likely never "settle" anywhere in the next 10 years of my life and will more than likely give Keene it's fair shake as well. There are other personal interests of mine that are available in abundance in Manch that I am excited to explore as well.
On a side note, thank you for all your work, Ian. Know that individuals thousands of miles away follow and are moved by what you do. It is inspiring, to say the least. (Hopefully this is the Ian I am thinking of, or this is quite embarrassing :-X)
Thanks.
There are certainly more things in Manch, but there are jobs in Keene, as you can see. Derrick got a job within a week of moving, but that's cause he got out there and put in the effort.
Absolutely. One of the great lessons I retained from Rand (if only she applied her principles consistently) was the importance of hard work and productivity. I have a strong distaste of free-loading and I don't take handouts.
I've been following Derrick and am constantly amazed by his efforts, and it is people like him, Ademo, and Pete that really drive me to want to be part of Keene, and bring what I can to build upon it as well. I have applied to CVS and Panera in Keene (thanks to the jobs forum), and will use some of my nest egg money to be in that area to land some work. Sorry for the flip-flopping all, but it is a big move and have been talking to my close friend who is from the area and feeding me information as well. Let's just say "to be determined" for now…
