This fork would have been interesting. Not because of free coin though that would have been be OK to claim. Because the divide would have drawn hard lines and segregated (pardon the pun) the groups. Now we will likely revisit this again later, in new forms.
Aside from confusion to new buyers, the SegWit2X backers would have looked really foolish as the Bitcoin community was overwhelmingly against it and its successful fork would have harmed pricing of other existing forks/altcoins.
The CEO’s that signed the NYA behind closed doors, without an invite to Core-devs, will continue taking attacks at Bitcoin in the future. And it can be guaranteed, they will come harder.
However… forkers beware, Bitcoin survived another attack, and because the opposition bowed out, BTC is now stronger because of it.

This isn’t over, because the high fees aren’t going away. The idea that the “Bitcoin Community” was “overwhelmingly against it” is propaganda pushed by Blockstream with a not-so-new disinformation campaign. The Core devs were invited to that event. The propaganda and lies are amazing. The “attack” on Bitcoin already happened.
