Back for Seconds

Greetings all, Dustin here.  I first introduced myself on the Free Keene forums two years ago, but since in that time I've transformed from a wanna-be politician to a voluntaryist/anarcho-capitalist, it seemed appropriate to repost an introduction.

My wife and I are planning on moving to New Hampshire as soon as possible, though we have some concerns.  We would love to live in the Keene area especially because of all the activists and liberty culture already present in that area.  However, we are concerned about employment opportunities in the Keene area.  My background is in computers, and my wife in finance.  We'd be willing to make some sacrifices to live nearby true liberty activists, but putting food on the table is important as well.

I'd appreciate any advice and suggestions any Keeniac may have in terms of where to live, jobs available, transportation advice (currently living in Idaho), etc.  I hope to be part of your community within a year or two!

Dustin

Welcome (again)! Wish I could get more advise on the area on employment but I only just got here myself and I tend to not be too aware of legal employment situations. I'll try to keep an eye out though.

I never said I was interested in complying with statist employment regulations.  I'm an agorist highly interested in counter-economics as well.

Oh joy! Another of us!   My apologies for assuming otherwise though. I do know antijingoist is involved with computer repair. He might be able to reference you to others.

Edit: I'd also check out www.nhunderground.com/forum

Surely you have seen the jobs and housing subsections of this forum?  Useful links and ideas there.

Also, I never had to look for work when I moved, but I hear it's easier when you are in NH.

That makes sense, of course.  The questions that remain are:

A: How much cash to have left over after trip expenses to cover the time while looking for work.

and

B: Is it worth waiting to move to NH to build up more funds and head to Keene, of come to NH sooner and go to Manchester where we're more likely to find work.

Come to Manchester first if you have to. Though I'm not a driver, from what I understand it isn't too far from Keene to come to events.

I started in Manch and ended up in Keene.  I must admit it's a good central starting point from which you can explore the rest of NH and then you can grab a nice opening for an apt or house in Keene or wherever else you decide when it becomes available and be happier with your accommodations.  Manch is simply a larger city and so you will almost inevitably find it easier to get a place, plus it's probably 2nd best other than Keene for walkers if you don't have a car.  Because I lived in Manch and the seacoast area first, I ended up feeling very confident in my decision to set down roots in Keene.  When I was in Manch, I found myself wanting to visit Keene a lot and hated going back.  Once I got to Keene, I found myself wanting to go to Manch less and less because I was comfortable here.

Sounds like a great suggestion, Dalebert.  We might just do that.

A:  The more the better.  I'd say at least your monthly living expenses x 6.

B:  If you're well-positioned to save money where you are, I'd say it's worth it to wait.  Don't move to NH and get stuck wasting your time with a sub-par job you've settled for because your savings have dwindled.  Wait till you're ready to be self-employed.  Stay below that radar.
