I have a problem with telling somebody who wants border control that they “support a police state”.
While I don’t disagree with Ian’s assessment, I do believe that it is an oversimplification of a complicated issue.
@FTL_Ian often proposes the solution of “just eliminate all government borders”.
This, at face value, sounds like a wonderful idea, but, in reality, it would cause a lot more problems than it “solved”.
If a person is willing to be honest, they will realize that ALL borders (public and private) are state-controlled, and if the public borders are removed, then there will be no resources to maintain the private borders.

It’s called private security.

Perhaps, but I’ve never seen a private security company be able to secure thousands of acres of land.
It’s a really big job which would require a really big company… And once a company gets that large, they are effectively a government themselves.

Not sure where “thousands of acres of land” comes in. Statism isn’t what’s to be protected. Individual property ownership is. I’m not sure why there’s a sudden invasion of statist attitudes here. It’s not good, and I’d rather not be associated with that crap.

Thousands of acres is a reference to the land that the government protects and helps to assign to private citizens.
I don’t see a realistic way to keep track of private property without it first being kept track of and protected by a government.

I do not subscribe to the nonsense that the government “protects” any land. You’re demonstrably wrong about keeping track of private property. This is ALREADY done by title companies, and they pre-date the US Government. Your argument here is not dissimilar to “who would build the roads.” That would be the people who already do most of it, and the people who did it before the state did it.

You are completely right about this, but that is not the way things are done today.
If we want to go back to a system where things are more privately done, we can do that, but until then, we have to work within the system that currently exists.

It is absolutely the way things are done today. You buy a house, you go to a title company and you process the title.

And these title companies are operating under the laws and jurisdiction of local and federal governments.

Everything except the black market is operating under the laws and jurisdiction of local and federal governments. That does not counter the reality that title companies predate any of those and still operate as they did. The fact that the county registers the title doesn’t, either. Come to think of it, I’m rather impressed title companies have not been abolished in favor of a government takeover.

Back to the main point. The state is an unnecessary party when it comes to my property line and the protection of it. There has been no government agent assuring that it is correct or that anyone does not cross.

I believe that you are very principled and, just like me, want to see more liberty and freedom in the world but…
I do believe you are wrong on this.
The government has most definitely been protecting your property from invaders. Maybe they aren’t doing a good job, or maybe they do such a good job that they don’t seem to be the ones doing it.

re: gambling
Darryl cited a state law on gambling.
stock market trading (and ownership for that matter) fits this definition.

During this section of the show, the hosts used examples of how immigrants to the US often outperform natives when striving for the Nobel Prizes.
While I get what what they going for (these people are as potentially smart and as Industrious as natives), it doesn’t cover the other aspects of citizenship into the US.
The Nobel Prizes are Norwegian rewards and more accurately represent that culture.

the flaw in this is that there is no “private property” . dont believe me? then dont pay the yearly rent to the govt, and see how long before the real owner boots you to the curb and seizes “your” property. they will then sell it and give you nothing.
