Choices
« on: July 11, 2012, 10:59:00 AM »
I just wanted to note that there's a social event happening today planned by and attended largely by Keeniacs that (unless I missed it) is not posted about here on the Shire Society Forum. I found out about it on Facebook. As far as I can tell, that's the only place it was posted about.

Think about this a little bit. You are effectively ostracizing anyone who has chosen not to use Facebook. People who have chosen not to use Facebook for whatever reason are very possibly ignorant of this event. I know this happens because it happened to me all the time when I tried to extract myself from Facebook. I ultimately gave up. I realize Facebook isn't the government itself, but there are analogies to be made.

I'm not saying stop using Fedbook. I'm saying try not to allow it to alter your behavior so significantly that you push out all market alternatives and centralize all of your planning and connections and so forth in one place. Try to acknowledge people who, possibly for very valid reasons for them, have chosen not to get caught up in it. It's no wonder that people are constantly complaining about the service getting worse and worse because they are so indoctrinated into its' use that they don't just take their business elsewhere when they're not happy with it. No, unlike the government, FB is not not forcing you to use it. Instead, it's indoctrinated users are effectively forcing everyone to use it by inadvertently ostracizing anyone who doesn't.

I pray that this was a joke. If you really want people to come to your event, you don't limit the announcement to an exclusive group, no matter how large the group is. If Facebook were all we needed, this forum wouldn't even exist.

If you only put the posting on Facebook, only Facebook members will see it. Thus, only Facebook members will go. If the event is "Shire Facebook meet-up", then that's fine. But if it's something you expect the whole FSP to know about, then only putting it on Facebook, and not here, or on the FSP boards is kind of dumb. Use the entire support network, not just one little niche of it.

This only exists as a problem for those who choose to avoid Facebook. And really, nobody uses places like this to get that kind of info.

What's the name of this sub-forum again?

I don't know what event Dale was referring to but it was likely an event that the event creator either found unimportant or where the creator thought the audience would be limited.  If the event created wanted everyone to know about the event, my guess is it would have been posted to this calendar. http://freekeene.com/calendar/
Excellent advice for those considering moving to the Keene area

Apparently it's "Passive-aggressive Disagreements".

Funny, I thought it was "Activism, Social Events, & Volunteering," as in "this is the place to post all of those things."

Neither Dale or I are saying "Don't use Facebook." What we are saying is: "Don't use only Facebook."

FYI, I use this forum to keep abreast of happenings in the shire. I use this place to get that kind of info.

The forum used to be a great place to post and organize for events. I can't change the world though :(

I try to bring as many people as possible here.  Would love to hear about ideas to bring people out of FB.

The excuse for not posting it to the calendar by the organizer in question is that it was short notice.  However, it's important to note that exporting an event from Facebook to the FK calendar is very easy.  In fact, I'll add the instructions on how to the "How to use the Free Keene Calendar" thread.

I've expounded upon this subject quite a bit on the NHFree forum so I'm linking it for anyone who is interested so I don't have to repeat myself.

I thought my paranoia was equal opportunity.  That this is just as easily "secret stazi forum" as much as fb is Fedbook.

I'm not personally that obsessed about the privacy issues with FB beyond the trivial. Like I said, the gubment will get their info if they request it. Trivially, you can adjust your settings so that any joe schmoe creeper dude can't stalk you as easily and so forth.

I'm much more concerned with how it's crappy in a lot of ways and it doesn't get better because people use it so exclusively for everything, even some things it's not that good for. I'm just trying to get people to stop using it with such tunnel vision.
