Keene has a new anthem?
« on: January 22, 2012, 02:09:38 AM »
So I wrote this up today out of a spark of creation. Feedback please :)

Keene, New Hampshire (to the tune of San Fransisco by Scott Mckenzie)

If you're going to Keene, New Hampshire
Feel free to bring some marijuana there
If you are going to Keene, New Hampshire
No victim, no crime, 420s on the square

For those who come to Keene, New Hamphire
Shire folk are on liberty's side
In the streets of Keene New Hampshire
Copblockers about with cameras to provide

All across the nation
people need liberation
Peace is in motion
Kids recieve information
Quality education
Outreach is motion
Peace is in motion

For those who come to Keene, New Hampshire
theres lots you can do to stick it to the man
Shire choir and social Sundays
Live free or dance, lets give peace a chance

For those who come to Keene, New Hampshire
Come join the crew
Activism wants you...

Thanks for taking your time to write these alt lyrics.

As far as feedback... "No victim, no crime, 420s on the square" and "Copblockers about with cameras to provide" I find hard to fit into the pentameter of the original song.  Maybe I'm just used to a different recorded version than you.  Anyhow, that's my feedback, maybe you should get in touch with Sam A. Robrin; s/he's got a slew of awesome alt lyrics to songs and I bet s/he'd be interested in this.

I wrote this a couple of years ago--feel free to cannibalize it if the spirit so moves you!

KEENE, NEW HAMPSHIRE (WORK FOR FREEDOM IN YOUR TIME)

(“San Francisco (Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair”))
COPYRIGHT 2009 by Sam A. Robrin or whoever the hell it is who writes these things. Go ahead and use it (Hey, I lifted the melody!), but if you make a little money on it, I want some!

Scott McKenzie - San Francisco

If you're moving to Keene, New Hampshire,
You're set to work for freedom in your time.
If you're moving to Keene, New Hampshire,
You're going to find a chill and craggy clime
And those who move to Keene, New Hampshire,
Don't fear to face the mountains there to climb.
Breathe the air of Keene, New Hampshire:
Activism in action all the time.

'Midst the hope that it's bringing,
   You can hear freedom ringing:
             Free minds existing.
        Exponential improvement
        In the liberty movement—
      People persisting . . .
                           People resisting.

All those who move to Keene, New Hampshire,
Welcome the challenge of mountains there to climb.
Breathe the air of Keene, New Hampshire:
Activism in action all the time.

"No revolutionary movement is complete without its poetical expression. If such a movement has caught hold of the imagination of the masses, they will seek a vent in song for the aspirations, the fears and hopes, the loves and hatreds engendered by the struggle. Until the movement is marked by the joyous, defiant, singing of revolutionary songs, it lacks one of the most distinct marks of a popular revolutionary movement; it is a dogma of a few, and not the faith of the multitude."  — James Connolly
____

...the freedom songs are the soul of the movement. They are more than just incantations of clever phrases designed to invigorate a campaign . . .  We sing the freedom songs today for the same reason the slaves sang them, because we too are in bondage and the songs add hope to our determination that 'We shall overcome...  We shall overcome someday.' — Martin Luther King

Don't you just love those substitutions?  You can plug 'em in all over the place, and repurpose a song for any occasion!
When I figured out a few for "Keene, New Hampshire" (Like "San Francisco" and "Oklahoma"), I was able to go wild--e.g.:

(LIBERTY LIVES) IN KEENE, NEW HAMPSHIRE
("(I Left My Heart) In San Francisco"—Tony Bennett)
COPYRIGHT 2009 by Sam A. Robrin or whoever the hell it is who writes these things. Go ahead and use it (Hey, I lifted the melody!), but if you make a little money on it, I want some!
Tony Bennett - I Left My Heart In San Francisco (Original Stereo)

The sell-outs of the Party were lowering the bar.
I pin no hopes on any vacillating broadcast star.
     The clubs were always trumped
          On the college campus circuit.
I'm moving where real freedom-lovers are.

   Liberty lives
        In Keene, New Hampshire.
             From granite peaks
                  It lights my way.
                            To be where active activists
                            Raise consciousness, not fists;
                                 The points they make
                                  May make
                                       Statists pause
                                       And change laws.

      True freedom thrives
           In Keene, New Hampshire,
                Where dreamers do
                     To one day be.
                               I'm moving home, at last,
                                                   Keene, New Hampshire,
To make myself and my world free.

You couldn't make a better choice than move Northeast.
At some point, ev'rybody draws the line.
When you do, then you can say you tried, at least.

     Porcupine!  How can you decline?
Come and work for freedom's peaceful evolution.
You can see the problem—help with the solution.
Join the twenty thousand, and you'll have a voice.
Freedom of speech and freedom of choice.
Freedom of assembly with your allies here.
Freedom to work toward freedom from fear.

Keeeeeeeeeeeene, New Hampshire,

Keeeeeeeeeeeene, New Hampshire!
Since I've moved, I couldn't ask for more!
          Freedom in our time
          's a goal that I'm
Nearer than I've ever been before.

Most people don't "Live Free Or Die!"
If we live free, they'll give free a try!
                 So when we sing,
Hey!  At last, let freedom ring!,
                 It's hope we're bringing!
We'll make you free, Keene, New Hampshire!
                           Keene, New Hampshire.
                                Free Keene!
